Clark University

Jonas Clark Hall

Located in the working town of Worcester MA, it took us about an hour from the Boston Logan airport to arrive on this 50 acre campus in the “heart of New England.” We were warmly greeted and offered water and restroom facilities before being broken up into groups to tour the campus. One of the most notable locations on campus is the brick clock tower centerpiece Jonas Clark Hall. Named for the founder of Clark, this striking building houses classrooms and several different departments.

Things I noted about Clark from the tour, literature, and general vibe of campus:

It is a strong research school in a liberal arts community. Strong experiential and hands on learning opportunities. Clark offers a 5th year masters degree for no additional cost in their accelerated BA/Master’s program in 18 areas from accounting to teaching. https://www.clarku.edu/academics/accelerated-ba-masters-programs/.

Clark and Worcester work closely together and there are many opportunities for students to really get involved in the community. It’s a great place to study urban development, psychology, education and social justice. The Problems of Practice (POP) class is a requirement in every department and builds in opportunities for students to get out of the classroom and into the community.

The majority of students applying to Clark receive some sort of financial aid, either need or merit based, actively lowering the gap and making Clark a more affordable option for many families.

Clark is test optional, GPA and courses taken in high school matter (did you take advantage of rigor and opportunities to go beyond the minimum requirements?), and demonstrated interest matters!

According to the Clark newsletter December 2019, “We are looking for students whose applications made us laugh, think, and see the world in a new way.”
